Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion (2008, Domino)

Yes, I got the new Animal Collective album, Merriweather Post Pavillion. And yes, it is as good as the hype. So let me give you the low-down on the new Animal Collective, one of the most hyped albums of 2009.

It’s incredible. Absolutely stunning. I can’t pin point one specific thing about this album that is so impressive, it’s just (as with most Animal Collective albums) that overall feel you get while listening to it. It’s not going to give you chills like some Sigur Ros or Mogwai will, but after all, it’s not a post album. It’s danceable, but not bouncy or overly happy like Vampire Weekend or Justice. It’s just Animal Collective at their finest.

There is no true way to classify Animal Collective. Some call them post-rock, some call them techno. Those that tend to think in more general terms call them indie (however, these are the same people who classify Run-D.M.C. as “Rock ‘n Roll”) and still others call them experimental. However you can describe Animal Collective, you can always say that they know how to make an album.

When the released Strawberry Jam (one of 2007’s finest), many thought that they had hit their peak; however, Animal Collective have shown, once again, that they know what they’re doing. For example, on “My Girls”, it seems that the whole song in building towards a huge climax, keeping the listener waiting for some huge burst of energy. That burst, however, never comes and they have just kept someone listening to a song more intently that anyone could have thought possible. In “Brothersport”, they start off similarly to Fleet Foxes or Vampire Weekend in a very catchy, vocal intro; however, they soon deviate from this into typical Animal Collective style music, adding their own electronic elements to the song while retaining the melody.

Overall, as I said before, a very impressive way to kick off the new year.
